Fortunately, these symptoms are not a normal part of aging. These symptoms are associated with adrenal fatigue. The experienced physicians at Rose Wellness Center have helped hundreds of patients overcome adrenal fatigue in Northern Virginia and live life to the fullest once again.
What Is Adrenal Fatigue?
The adrenal glands are part of your endocrine system. They produce over 50 hormones that are essential for life; however, the top three hormones convert food to energy, regulate blood pressure and control blood flow. The names of these top three hormones are glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids and adrenaline.
Glucocorticoids help the body normalize blood sugar levels and maintain the inflammatory response in the body. These hormones enable the body to convert foods into energy. Another way glucocorticoids help the body is by helping the body deal with stress naturally.
Mineralocorticoids help the body normalize blood volume and blood pressure.. This group of hormones maintains the mineral composition in the body, thus effectively balancing the sodium, water and potassium levels in the body.
Adrenaline is used by the body to control the blood flow from the heart to the brain and muscles. It also helps regulate the heart rate and aids in converting glycogen to glucose.
Your hormones are produced by several glands, including your adrenal glands. The adrenal glands are located above the kidneys and the release of hormones can become fatigued or sluggish when chronic or extreme illness or stress occurs. Symptoms vary by patient and by how fatigued the adrenal responses have become.
Adrenal Fatigue Symptoms
The fatigue experienced by patients suffering with adrenal fatigue is quite different from ordinary fatigue. Sufferers often experience fatigue, even on waking; however, during the evening hours, their energy levels may increase. This is often caused by a disrupted cortisol cycle.
Feelings of Melancholy - Mood Disorders
Sufferers often report a lack of enthusiasm and the inability to cope during stressful times. These feelings occur when the adrenal glands do not produce enough cortisol or epinephrine.
Low Blood Sugar
Low blood sugar is directly related to the glucocorticoids in the body. When the adrenal glands do not produce adequate amounts of glucocorticoids, blood sugar regulation is impossible. Additionally, the body may crave salty snacks if it is not receiving enough mineralocorticoids.
When the body is not functioning properly, unintended weight gain can occur. Weight gain occurs any time the body is not functioning properly. Oftentimes, it is the result of inflammation within the body.
In addition to the symptoms listed above, you may experience allergies and respiratory complaints, including increased incidence of upper respiratory illnesses, asthma and breathing difficulties. Many patients also complain of low libido, dizziness, low back pain and loss of muscle tone. Numbness in the extremities, poor circulation, dry skin and dark circles or bags under the eyes may also occur. Finally, adrenal fatigue can cause male or female hormone imbalances, interfere with thyroid function, joint pain, pitting and lines on the fingertips and frequent urination.
What Are the Causes of Adrenal Fatigue?
Adrenal fatigue occurs when the adrenal glands cannot produce enough hormones to meet the demands that stress puts on the body. When stress occurs, the adrenal glands go to work to provide the hormones necessary to strengthen the body against the effects of stress. Adrenal fatigue can be caused by prolonged stress or illness, or major surgery. Additionally, several health conditions could cause adrenal fatigue, including chronic or acute infections, such as pneumonia, bronchitis or the flu.
Almost anyone can develop adrenal fatigue; however, there are several things can increase the chance of developing adrenal fatigue. People with bad lifestyle habits, such as poor diet, too little sleep or substance abuse, are at an increased risk of developing adrenal fatigue. Furthermore, those who feel trapped in abusive or bad relationships or those who are under a lot of stress at work have an increased risk of developing this condition. Poverty or imprisonment can also increase the risk of developing this disorder. Finally, adrenal fatigue can occur during pregnancy.
