Pain can be either chronic or acute. Functional Chiropractic Care can help with pain management and speed up the healing process; however, the treatments plans and goals can be quite different.

Acute PainPain Management in Fairfax Virginia

Acute pain is described as pain that occurs due to injury or overuse. Acute pain is your body's way of telling you that something is wrong. When you twist your ankle, your body sends pain signals to your brain that an injury has occurred. This warning mechanism is actually there to help protect your body from further injury. Whether you have accidentally been injured or you have injured yourself from overuse, pain can occur.

Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is continuous ongoing pain that has persisted for more than 3 months and is complicated to treat. Chronic pain is often caused by a neurological condition where the body's warning system does not function properly. Instead, the brain thinks that the body is continually injured, due to the fact that the injured tissue involved has physiologically changed and improperly adapted. Treatment of chronic pain differs from acute care in that the goal is to first narrow down or localize the cause of the symptoms rather than simply cut the pain sensor. This can be done with orthopedic testing and functional motion assessment of the body. Once localized, we can treat the source of the pain symptoms leading to a gradual decrease in the overall pain levels as the body re-adapts properly. Because chronic pain seems to affect multiple areas of the body, it can take some time to fully feel the effects of treatment. But the key is to note subtle changes that occur initially and larger changes over time.

How Can Functional Chiropractic Care Help?

Whether you are suffering from chronic pain or acute pain, functional chiropractic can help provide pain relief, decrease inflammation, and speed up the healing process. During each session, your chiropractor will ask questions to help determine the type of pain and the severity of your pain. Each session will also include testing of the injured area and adjacent areas to determine changes being made and to check if proper adaptation is occurring. Treatment can be similar or completely different than previous ones depending on what your body shows us. Remember, the goal is not to just get chiropractic adjustments, it is to heal your body with a variety of methods allowing you to get back to your life faster.
