Integrative Medicine – Integrative Doctor
What Is Integrative Medicine?
The World Health Organization defines health as- "a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." Integrative medicine incorporates all aspects of the patient’s lifestyle to produce positive results. According to the US National Library of Science, "Integrative medicine combines mainstream medical therapies and Complementary and Alternative (CAM) therapies for which there is some high-quality scientific evidence of safety and effectiveness (NCCAM)". Integrative physicians go beyond just treating the symptoms and work to determine the cause of the illness and steps to complete healing of the body, mind and spirit.
Integrative medicine or integrated medicine utilizes the body's own innate ability to heal itself, in conjunction with scientifically proven therapies. Oftentimes, a practitioner will suggest natural interventions that are less invasive than many traditional therapies to allow the body to heal itself. However, it should be noted that integrative doctors can and do choose conventional medical approaches as well.
Did Your Know?
During the mid-1990s, medical physicians began to realize that combining alternative treatments, including herbal remedies, massage and hypnotherapy with conventional medical treatments resulted in better patient results. This resulted in a branch of medicine termed integrative medicine.
Statistics show that more and more people are turning to complementary health approaches. In 2012, about one third of the adults in the United States have used complementary medicine. The most common type of complementary medicine used was dietary supplements; however, other treatments, including massage, acupuncture and meditation, were also used. Source -
Benefits of Integrative Medicine
Integrative medicine can be used for a variety of illnesses such as Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease and other diseases that can affect the mind and body. Additionally, integrative medicine is used for treating various chronic conditions such as fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic fatigue, insomnia, mood disorders, hormonal imbalances and hypothyroidism. Some key benefits include -
- Integrative medicine embraces conventional and alternative medicine approaches and realizes the benefits of each type of medicine.
- Integrative physicians and other integrative practitioners work to prevent illness and treat disease using natural products as well as conventional therapies. The practitioners may consult with medical specialists as needed.
- Depending on the conditions to be treated, integrative medicine may involve the use of multiple alternative treatments such as acupuncture, allergy management, Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT), energy healing, massage therapy, physical therapy and sleep therapy.
- Dietary and lifestyle modification may be recommended to improve the body's ability to heal itself.
Integrative care is used to help prevent disease by incorporating relaxation techniques, lifestyle changes and nutritional suggestions. By learning to be more self-aware, patients are able to notice physical and emotional symptoms as soon as they occur. By noticing changes quickly, patients and integrative practitioners can work together to minimize symptoms.
What to Expect During a Integrative Medicine Visit?
Integrative care seeks to develop a therapeutic relationship between the doctor and patient. This specialized form of medicine emphasizes the bio-psycho-socio-spiritual aspects of a person to improve health. The therapeutic relationship between the doctor and you results in longer in-depth appointments. During the appointment, the doctor discusses all aspects of your life and creates a customized treatment plan. Personalized care is offered based on the patient's unique set of circumstances, including dietary choices, community, family history and lifestyle choices. This is because there are many things that influence health, including body, mind, spirit and community. A variety of tests may be ordered, including blood tests, saliva tests, and more.
