Adrenal Insufficiency

What Is Adrenal Fatigue?

The adrenal glands are part of your endocrine system. They produce over 50 hormones that are essential for life; however, the top three hormones – glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids and adrenaline – convert food to energy, regulate blood pressure and control blood flow.

  • Glucocorticoids help the body normalize blood sugar levels and maintain the inflammatory response in the body. These hormones enable the body to convert foods into energy. Another way glucocorticoids help the body is by helping the body deal with stress naturally.
  • Mineralocorticoids help the body normalize blood volume and blood pressure.. This group of hormones maintains the mineral composition in the body, thus effectively balancing the sodium, water and potassium levels in the body.
  • Adrenaline is used by the body to control the blood flow from the heart to the brain and muscles. It also helps regulate the heart rate and aids in converting glycogen to glucose.

Your hormones are produced by several glands, including your adrenal glands. The adrenal glands are located above the kidneys and the release of hormones can become fatigued or sluggish when chronic or extreme illness or stress occurs. Symptoms vary by patient and by how fatigued the adrenal responses have become.

Adrenal Fatigue Symptoms

  • Feelings of Melancholy and Mood Disorders – Sufferers often report a lack of enthusiasm and the inability to cope during stressful times. These feelings occur when the adrenal glands do not produce enough cortisol or epinephrine.
  • Low Blood Sugar – Low blood sugar is directly related to the glucocorticoids in the body. When the adrenal glands do not produce adequate amounts of glucocorticoids, blood sugar regulation is impossible. Additionally, the body may crave salty snacks if it is not receiving enough mineralocorticoids.
  • Weight Gain – When the body is not functioning properly, unintended weight gain can occur. Weight gain occurs any time the body is not functioning properly. Oftentimes, it is the result of inflammation within the body.
  • Allergies.
  • Upper Respiratory Illnesses, asthma and breathing difficulties.
  • Male or female hormone imbalances and thyroid disorders.
  • Low back pain or joint pain, loss muscle tone.
  • Other SymptomsMany patients also complain of low libido, dizziness, numbness in the extremities, poor circulation, dry skin and dark circles or bags under the eyes. In addition, adrenal fatigue can also cause pitting and lines on the fingertips and frequent urination.

Causes of Adrenal Fatigue

Almost anyone can develop adrenal fatigue; however, several things can increase the chance of developing adrenal fatigue.

  • Chronic Stress – Adrenal fatigue occurs when the adrenal glands cannot produce enough hormones to meet the demands that stress puts on the body. When stress occurs, the adrenal glands go to work to provide the hormones necessary to strengthen the body against the effects of stress. Adrenal fatigue can be caused by prolonged stress or illness, or major surgery.
  • Chronic or acute infections, such as pneumonia, bronchitis or the flu.
  • Unhealthy lifestyle habits, such as poor diet, too little sleep or substance abuse.
  • Trapped in abusive or bad relationships.
  • Poverty or imprisonment.
  • Adrenal fatigue can occur during pregnancy.
